Case Studies
Geoff advocated at the Texas Legislature in a successful effort to change state laws and better enable the victims of sexual abuse to seek and obtain the recoveries they deserve. The efforts resulted in the enactment of two major laws benefiting the victims of sexual assault who are minors, and representation of many of the victims on a pro bono basis in order to obtain damages for their injuries.
Geoff represented the Chapter 11 trustee of a prominent Texas leasing company that filed bankruptcy, leaving many unpaid creditors. Geoff brought claims against the company’s directors and accountants, alleging breaches of fiduciary duty and malpractice. The bankruptcy trustee used the settlement of these claims to make significant payments to all creditors.
A major Texas construction and development company brought claims in a Florida court against another company that allegedly interfered with the development of a regional convention center. Geoff reached a favorable, confidential settlement on behalf of his Texas-based client.
Geoff represented a public company bringing claims against multiple defendants for tortious interference with its customers, based on anonymous postings on the Internet. Through a series of lawsuits and investigative efforts, the identities of the anonymous posters were determined and all unlawful postings were stopped.
For the first time in the company’s history, Geoff was responsible for the recovery of punitive damages on behalf of his client, a major telecommunications provider. The case involved environmental claims against an oil distributor that allowed gasoline to leak and permeate the company’s telephone lines. Based on this success, Geoff has represented the company in multiple other plaintiff claims.
Geoff represented a Texas cattle company in the prosecution of its claims against a national production company over issues stemming from the purchase of large lots of cattle. At trial, the jury returned a verdict for Geoff’s client, which he collected despite the company’s appeals.
A group of Central Texas homeowners’ associations engaged Geoff to stop the development plans of a neighboring landowner due to environmental concerns. The case settled with an agreement to provide for environmentally sound development of the property.
Geoff represented an out-of-state insurance broker in claims against a statewide Texas insurance company. The case resulted in a complete verdict for the broker, with the jury awarding all damages and attorneys’ fees requested. The insurance company is currently appealing the judgment ordering it pay all attorneys’ fees, but given up any effort to appeal the primary recovery.
