Defense Litigation :

I think most of the companies that hire me understand that doing work on the other side of the table – representing plaintiffs – makes me a better defense lawyer too.

Case Studies

  • Geoff represented the recipient of an estate against claims by the executor that the recipient, a woman 40 years younger than the deceased, improperly coerced the deceased. Geoff managed and tried this controversial case with his client, obtaining a verdict in her favor, and ultimately obtaining clear title to virtually all of the estate’s assets.

  • In an intellectual property dispute, Geoff defended a pharmaceutical company in a trademark violation claim. After presenting his client’s defense at trial, the plaintiff dismissed all of its claims, and Geoff’s client obtained rights to use the trademark and recovered all its attorneys’ fees.

  • Geoff represented the estate of a central Texas rancher against allegations by a bank that the estate owed the institution significant sums. Following a verdict for Geoff’s client, the lender withdrew all financial claims against the estate.

  • A major real estate brokerage franchisor turned to Geoff when several of its independent brokers were accused of having breached a commercial lease. The case resulted in a landmark Texas Supreme Court opinion for Geoff’s clients, a decision that led to new financial limitations for Texas landlords in similar cases.

  • Geoff defended a national oil and gas exploration company in response to claims that the company did not diligently and properly maintain an oil and gas well. Following the conclusion of the evidence, the plaintiff agreed to drop its claims and settle with Geoff’s clients.

  • Geoff represented a regional telecommunications provider and its publishing division against class-action claims that the company’s publications were not delivered promptly, depriving businesses of the full value of their advertising. Geoff obtained a summary judgment for the company and, on appeal, obtained decertification of the class action against the publishing division, for a full victory.
